Attach Source Documents to Your Context
Upload reference files so CntX can index them and use them when enriching your brand platform, strategy, and content generation.
Overview
Context source documents are optional files you attach at the workspace level—typically from Context while configuring your company or brand platform. They complement structured fields (products, ICPs, personas, competitors) with material that already exists inside your organization: pitch decks, offer sheets, brand guidelines, persona notes, case studies, or internal positioning docs.
Once uploaded, CntX analyzes and indexes each file into your workspace knowledge base (RAG). Indexed documents are not applied instantly to every screen; they are consumed on the next relevant enrichment pass—most notably when you update your brand platform, and indirectly when planning, briefs, and content generation draw on that enriched context.
This is different from campaign source documents, which belong to a specific campaign window and feed one-off communication strategy and campaign brief generation. Context documents are durable workspace assets; campaign documents are scoped to a launch or initiative.
When to use
Use context source documents when:
- You already have strong written assets (PDF, DOCX, decks, guidelines) that are more complete than what you can type into forms.
- Onboarding or context discovery surfaced gaps, and you want to ground AI suggestions in real company material.
- Your team debates positioning, tone, or offers—and you want one canonical file set referenced across strategy and production.
- You need richer retrieval for brief angles, messaging, and drafts without pasting the same excerpts into every prompt.
Skip or defer uploads if your workspace context is still empty (no products, no audiences). Documents help refine and enrich; they do not replace structured context.
Before you start
- Complete at least basic company context: products, brand basics, and ideally one audience.
- Confirm you are in the correct workspace (context sources are workspace-scoped).
- Prepare files in supported formats: PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD, or JSON, each 20 MB or less.
- Know that indexing can take a few minutes; status moves from Imported → Analyzing → Indexed (or Error).
- If you are viewing another account as Super Admin, uploads may be read-only—use a normal workspace session to add or remove files.
Steps
- Open Context from the sidebar and navigate to the section labeled Context sources (often within brand platform or company context configuration).
- Review the empty-state hints: pitch decks, brochures, offers, guidelines, persona notes, and existing content are typical starting points.
- Drag and drop a file onto the drop zone, or choose Import a document / browse files to select one from your computer.
- Wait for processing. Use Refresh if the list does not update automatically. Do not assume the file is usable until status shows Indexed.
- Add additional files incrementally. Prefer a small, high-signal set (5–10 strong documents) over dumping an entire drive.
- When documents are indexed, run Update on your brand platform (or the equivalent enrichment action in context) so the latest indexed corpus is incorporated.
- Optionally remove outdated files with Remove so retrieval does not favor obsolete positioning.
Expected result
Your workspace holds a visible list of context source documents with clear statuses. Indexed files participate in retrieval when CntX enriches your brand platform and when downstream flows (content strategy analysis, calendar planning, brief generation, draft generation) need factual or tonal grounding beyond structured fields.
You should see more accurate AI suggestions that reflect your real terminology, offers, and proof points—especially after a brand platform update following new uploads.
Tips / common issues
- Indexed but no visible change yet: Trigger a brand platform update. Indexing makes files available; enrichment applies them to structured context.
- Upload errors: Check format and size. Unsupported types and files over 20 MB are rejected.
- Stuck on Analyzing or Error: Retry with a smaller export (e.g., PDF instead of a heavy DOCX), remove special protections, or re-upload. Persistent errors may need support.
- Do not duplicate campaign docs here: Launch-specific master briefs belong on the campaign; evergreen reference material belongs in context sources.
- Keep versions tidy: Replace outdated pricing or positioning files instead of accumulating conflicting versions.
- Security: Files are used only to improve your workspace context; still avoid uploading credentials or personal data you would not share with your marketing team.
Next step
After your core context fields and at least one indexed document set are in place, define who you are speaking to by creating ICPs, personas, and audiences—or move directly to Create a Content Strategy if your reference library is already solid.
